INDEX: Independent Artist Exhibition – Invisible Thread

Curated by Bonolo Kavula | Special Project at RMB Latitudes Art Fair 2025

Now in its third edition, INDEX continues to disrupt the traditional art fair model by spotlighting independent artists who forge their own paths beyond the gallery system. This year’s group exhibition, Invisible Thread, curated by artist Bonolo Kavula, brings together a powerful assembly of South African creatives linked not by institutions, but by their shared dedication to material experimentation, identity, and community. The exhibition honours the informal, often digital networks that support emerging artists—networks grounded in collaboration, mentorship, and curiosity.

Threaded with meaning both literal and symbolic, the show features works by Yonela Doda, Thato Makatu, Tshepo Phokojoe, Khanyi Mawhayi, Dineo Ponde, Unathi Mkonto, Tinyiko Makwakwa, and Kavula herself. From stitched poetry and sculptural hessian to natural-dye textiles and spatial constructions, Invisible Thread weaves together themes of home, memory, resistance, and belonging. The result is a vibrant, process-driven presentation that challenges the boundaries of representation while celebrating creative kinship.
